Friendship is a form of equality which is comparable to justice, returning to each other benefits similar to those received.

In connecting with others, it is important to do so with those who encourage us to elevate ourselves. This is where philosophical friendship comes in, as it is a bond of the heart and soul. To be a philosopher is to befriend wisdom. Fraternity means befriending the best that others have to offer. Friendship means sharing goals and ideas, and the same desire to serve, help and improve. It’s a demanding, elevated and profound relationship.

For Aristotle, the building of a truly human society depends on the ability of citizens to enter into friendship with one another. Friendship is the cement of social unity.
